“LET'S GO NATIVE”is a Civic Development Grant program funded by the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with National Garden Clubs. Grants will be awarded up to $1,000 with matching funds to clubs, districts, regions and states within National Garden Clubs. California Garden Clubs, Inc. applied for $1,000 as a state project requesting grant money to landscape Blue Star Memorial markers with native plants. The landscaping may be at new or established markers using at least 80% native plants.

At the CGCI Fall Board meeting it was voted to meet the matching funds needed of $1,000, plus another $1,000, so that clubs and districts could request $100 for landscaping. The application below must be completed, with a “before” photo, and mailed to Ruth Angevine, address on application, by February 21, extended to MARCH 21, 2008.
National Garden Clubs granted CGCI $500 more for landscaping around existing or new markers. Let's landscape the many markers that look so bleak and unloved.

ONE SHEET APPLICATION TO INCLUDE A “BEFORE” PHOTO OF THE BLUE STAR MEMORIAL MARKER (NEW OR ESTABLISHED) TO BE LANDSCAPED USING NATIVE PLANTS, (must be at least 80% native). List estimated cost of plants and landscaping, with sketch, if possible
Final report showing completed landscaping with “after” photo, a brief report regarding future maintenance plans, member involvement (hands-on labor at $7 per hour) & financial report listing cost of plants & any donations due April 15, 2009.

The Internet has good sources for native plant nurseries. California Native Plant Society is a good source; Golden Gardens “Bring Back the Natives” articles as well as Theodore Payne California Native Plant Society, plus others.
